From 10 October 2024, I am moving Notes in the Margin to Substack. It will now be appearing more regularly, as a series of twice-monthly reflections on reading and writing, people and places, town and country – with the occasional post on history, archaeology, maps, Roman coins and anything else that takes my fancy. It is not driven by any publishing schedule, and while it may occasionally feature reviews of new books, many of the posts will be devoted to old – and sometimes very old – ones.

I hope readers who have followed me here for several years will forgive me if I occasionally resurrect an old post that seems to have renewed relevance, and will be new to recent subscribers.

Paid subscriptions will be £3.50 monthly, £35 annually, and £50 for founding subscribers.
